Why Do I Need A Dental Filling?

If you have a cavity, you need a dental filling. Cavities start out as a minor oral health issue, but if they’re left untreated, they can cause a tooth infection, which will eventually kill your tooth if you don’t get the care you need.

If you notice sensitivity to heat and cold or sugary foods/drinks in one of your teeth, your tooth feels tender when you chew, or you notice visible discoloration or pits in a tooth, these could all indicate the presence of a cavity. The best way to determine if you need a filling is to call Scarsdale Smiles for an appointment with Dr. Alex Cox.

Does It Hurt To Get A Filling?

Not at all. The filling process is minimally-invasive. Dr. Cox will only remove a little bit of your tooth material with a dental drill. This must be done to remove any decayed and damaged enamel that could interfere with the placement of your filling.

Your mouth will be completely numb during this process, and we even offer sedation options like laughing gas for minimal sedation, as well pill-based oral conscious sedation for deeper sedation at our office. If you’re worried about pain or discomfort, get in touch to discuss sedation with our team members, and see if it’s right for you.

You can also go right back to your day-to-day routine after getting a filling. Your tooth may feel slightly sensitive, but you should feel no significant pain or discomfort, even immediately after your filling is placed. If your tooth is extremely sensitive or continues to cause pain after 1-2 weeks, you may want to contact Scarsdale Smiles for a follow-up appointment, as this is not normal.

How Long Will My Filling Last?

This depends on the type of filling you get. At Scarsdale Smiles, we offer both tooth-colored composite fillings and metal amalgam fillings. Composite fillings tend to have a shorter lifespan than metal fillings, usually about 5-7 years. In contrast, amalgam fillings usually last 10-15 years.

However, this depends on how well you care for your teeth. If you maintain good oral hygiene, you can extend the lifespan of your filling by quite a bit, whether you choose a metal filling or a composite filling. Make sure to brush and floss properly, and to see Dr. Cox for an appointment every six months so he can check on your teeth and your dental work.
